Good Training Bag - Recommended July 28, 2010 CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1FJPA4OSC7ZG7 The Century Wavemaster Freestanding Training Bag is a decent bag for martial arts workouts. Our TeaKwonDo studio has about eight of these and we liked using them in our workouts. We were lucky enough to get ours locally and find it a very useful training aid. Here are my observations:
While I really can't speak to the packaging or shipping of these, the setup really couldn't be easier. This unit consists of the hollow base and the striking padding. The Base can be filled with water (which we use), sand, or a combination of both. When filled with water it is weighs over 200lbs and can moved around by tilting it on an angle and rolling it. The pad is inserted over the base shaft and can be adjusted by twisting and positioning it near the correct height and locking it in place (see video).
The assembled and filled unit is fairly sturdy, but it does tend to move and slide around when it is hit with force (see video). We usually use ours in the yard or on mats in our garage so the movement isn't really a problem for us, but this would make a racket on a house or apartment floor.
The large base is not a target area and needs to be avoided when kicking. The base also rocks upwards and it would be possible to get toes caught under it on the bounce, so some caution needs to be used if advancing on the unit.
The striking padding is thick enough to absorb the hardest blows, but the covering can be a little rough on the knuckles if gloves aren't worn for protection. The covering has held up well, both on ours and on the ones we use in class.
This is a very good alternative to a heavy bag and really helps to develop better striking power.
Recommended, with the above caveats.

Very durable, great for angry management. July 27, 2010 Southernreign (Charlotte, NC) I bought this bag used via craigslist at a third of the cost of new for my wife who is 5' 1" for 'angry management'. I tried to use the unit also myself (GLOVES are a MUST).
I am 5'10" 200+ pounds. I over-filled the unit over the recommended 270# with 280# of sand. I added 2 gallons of water also from an old milk container. Each gallon adds 8.3# to the container. (Sand has plently of air-space for water to fill!)
I made the mistake of buying eight 40# bags of sand (which was moist) from wal-mart and it took 2 hours to get the sand into the unit via a large mouth funnel. The sand kept sticking to the funnel and I had to push it through by hand. If you fill unit with sand, make sure your sand has been washed and DRIED! Lowes hardware has VERY good 50# white dried-playsand.
The unit has a 'cap/plug' in the top of the unit which looks like it would un-screw. Trust me... it does NOT. It is fused-molded into unit.
I ended up cutting a 1 1/2" threaded PVC female adapter into the top of the unit in place of the molded cap, and used two-part epoxy to 'glue' to the unit. I then used 1 1/2" plug to seal top.
I ended up buying 100#s more of sand. This time DRIED! Went in through the top in 5 minutes.
I then added 2-more gallons-of-water to the sand. Giving my boxing set-up 430+ pounds of weight. (including all the plastic)
Note* I would not use this unit on a second floor room. The weight will shake the floor. (Apartment people take note)I have had to move to first floor! (NOT FUN! A good Dolly a MUST at point it is filled with sand)
If the unit is only filled with water, it makes some annoying swishing noise of the water motion inside.
My wife loves this unit... I have heard her use it several times late at night. Now her running friends 'join' in on the boxing fun.
WaveMaster free standing punching bag July 22, 2010 jpep I love my Wavemaster training bag. I can take it to any room in my home and work out! So much more convenient than going to the gym and paying a ridiculous amount in gym fees.
Happy with punching bag June 30, 2010 M. Maier This is a decent punching bag for kickboxing aerobics, etc. I am a women. This bag work out just fine for me. I am using it on carpet floor. I filled it out with 3 bags of sand (60 lbs each). It skate just a bit, but I work around it. It can be fill out to the max of 230 lbs. If you have very... strong punches, may be you should consider a better bag. Otherwise fill it out to the max and work around the bag. You'll enjoy it.
Good product with some design flaws June 26, 2010 Wonder 4 stars is just what it deserves ; I was very concerned before buying it that i would make a lot of noise , i had no choice as it was cheaper than other heavy free standing bags , i can't mount a traditional bag to the ceiling and i need to do my morning cardio ,so i thought it would be better than buying a clumsy elliptical and cheaper too . filled it up with water , and the reason is that if i fill it up with sand ;sand cannot balance back in the container after the hit and i might have to shake it to level the sand ,but water can level up after each hit . i filled large plastic container with water and brought a jug and a funnel , and refilled the plastic container about 7 times to fill the whole bottom of the bag . btw u might wanna think of how u would need to empty the bottom if u need to , if u have a hose or an easy to bend plastic tube, roll the free standing bag to the bathroom tub , take the cushioned part of the bag off before doing this so it won't get wet ,put one end in the opening and suck some water till it reaches your mouth then put the end that was in ur mouth in the tub and make sure it's on a lower level than the end inserted in the bottom container of the punching bag ,as water flows form high level to low level until equilibrium according to physics ,and that should empty most of the container . now here are some things u need to know , the cushioned part of the bag is well made , not so soft or so hard , durable and easy to adjust , yet it doesn't fit tight on the stem so u will need to use some duct tape to eliminate movement and hence noise ;and here comes the worst flaw , the bottom of the container is not flat at the edges it's rather rounded , so each times it gets hit it will tip a little and then come back and slam on the floor , and when u live in an apartment u and ur neighbors will feel the vibrations , it will not fall off unless u hit it with an incredible force so don't worry about that .but the noise is a bit of an issue .so i used 2 chair cushions and 6-Piece Puzzle Mat ,and arranged them in the best way possible to reduce movement and noise . and i used 4 pieces of rope to tie the whole thing together ,put them on the ground and built the structure on top of it ,and i attached 3 pictures to explain how , if u will do this make sure not to fill it until u put it on top of the cusion/pad structure ,it's HEAVY . overall it's an efficient alternative for a traditional bag if u don't have the option of hanging one .
note: use gloves and shin pads to protect urself ,don't stand too close to the bag ,don't worry the base is not that big and u will have a good reach .
