Whenever
we come to read something on golf, the name of one man can never go unnoticed.
He is none other than the world’s best golfer, Tiger Woods. With a long list of
triumphs than any other golfer, Woods shares a prestigious position in the
world of golf. His consistent victories and never ending success made him one
of the popular faces of the PGA Tour. Although the current scandals have
hindered the performance of this golf icon and have dragged him down the line,
Woods will continue to dominate the hearts of his fans in the near future.
Born
on 30th December, 1975 in California, Tiger Woods’s original name
was Eldrick Tont Woods. He was a good athlete and a swimmer too. His father
loved to call him by the name of “Tiger” in honor of a close friend who had the
same name. Woods became addicted to golf right from his childhood. In fact, he
achieved his professional standards at the age of eight in a television show
known as Good Morning America.
Prior
to turning to a professional golfer, Tiger Woods completed his education from
Stanford University. It was the year 1996 when he grabbed a good number of
amateur golf titles. In 1997, Tiger Woods won the US Masters at Augusta and
achieved worldwide popularity. He stunned almost every golf enthusiast when he
won with a record score of 270 and that too at just 21. He came to be known as
the youngest man as well as the first African-American to win the title.
Later
in the same year, Tiger Woods took part in the British Open and succeeded to
tie the course record of 64. Countless triumphs followed in the next few years
when Woods bagged four US PGA titles, three US Open titles, three US Masters
and three Open Championships. The biggest victories of Woods in 2003 were the
Western Open and the Buick Invitational and this almost took him to the top
rankings.
In
2004, Tiger Woods married Elin Nordegren, a Swedish model. Woods had courted Elin for
long and finally they were together. Elin proved a lucky charm for Tiger since
the latter won six championships in the following year of his marriage and was
declared the PGA Tour player of the year. Well, this was the seventh time in
nine years that Tiger Woods earned this title.
In 2006, Tiger
Woods lost his father in a cancer. Despite a big
personal loss, he thereafter won several titles including the British Open and
the PGA Championship. His triumphs didn’t end when he went ahead and won the
U.S. Open in 2008 that took place in a 19-hole playoff.
The darkest phase in Woods’ life
came in the year 2010. The golf news agency flashed reports about his
extra-marital affair with several women. The whole world along with all the
professional golfers was taken aback once they came to know about Woods’
personal life. The golf
news reports says that his present field performance
has dipped a bit and therefore he is trying with all heart and soul to get back
to his former position.
